Born in 1966 in
Los Angeles, Darin Pappas (also known as Ithaka Darin Pappas) took an early interest in photography under the influence of
his father, a devout hobbyist, and by age five was using both 35mm and 120mm film formats. Growing up in southern California,
his early work was largely documentary of youth culture and the So Cal surf-skate lifestyle that had spawned him. Although
already being published in skateboarding magazines by the age of seventeen (including Thrasher), Pappas began assisting fashion
and celebrity photographers shortly after graduating high school, eventually working on his own and being published in Essence,
Elle, Glamour, US, etc. In addition, he photographed several record covers in the gangster rap genre of the late 80's and
early '90s, most notably the maxi-single cover for NWA's legendary, double platinum hit, STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON on Priority
Records. Pappas worked for Priority regularly until 1991 when he left Los Angeles "to find himself" spending significant
amounts of time in Greece and Japan, then moving to Lisbon, Portugal for a period of six years, finally relocating his base
back to Los Angeles from 1998-2005. His commercial work in Portugal consisted primarily of shooting record covers for EMI-Valentim
de Carvalho, photo-journalism for Surf Portugal Magazine and set stills for the films of director, Edgar Pera. More importantly,
for the first time, Pappas began doing major exhibitions of his personal photography, documenting one of the most artistically
influential periods of his life in the series, "PEACE, LOVE & PORTUGAL?", an extremely intimate view into his own life and
the lives of those closest to him. His global travels have also taken him to Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Mexico, Philippines,
Morocco, Cape Verde-West Africa, Kenya, Tanzania, and Peru. He is currently lives in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
His
more important photo series include: SAINT MAARTEN SCRAPBOOK, "QUALITY TIME:PART 1" (Tokyo), "QUALITY TIME:PART 2" (Lisbon),
"AS AVENTURAS DO KORVORAO" (Lisbon), "UMBILICUS" (Tokyo), "Peace, Love & Portugal?"(Lisbon).
His subjects have included:
